If you are a beginner in learning English, somehow you may get frustrated because your EFL learning seems to take a really long time. It seems that you have started learning English for years but you are still not able to use English for the means of communication well. Here are some tips that you may follow in order to maximize your learning of English:

1.  Keep in mind that learning a language is a gradual process

Keep in your mind that it does not happen overnight. Therefore, of course it takes time and process.

2.  Define your learning Objectives early

It will help you to stay in focus. By having the objectives early you will have a certain target to reach so that you will be encouraged to keep on learning and achieving your target.

3.  Make learning a habit – learn English constantly

Allocate some of your time everyday to learn a certain material in English. It is much better studying (read, watch movie, or listen to English song or news, etc.) at least 10 minutes every day than studying for 2 hours once a week. If you just study once a week, English will not be as present in your mind.

4.  Choose your materials well

Match your materials with your language ability. Do not choose material that is too difficult because that can discourage you to learn. On the other hand, also avoid choosing material that is too easy because it can make you easily bored. Moreover, varied your materials so that they can accommodate all the skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

5.  Vary your learning materials and routine

If you just study the same areas of English, you will easily get bored. Hence, it is best to do different things each day to help keep the various relationships between each area active. Give exposure to all your modalities; for instance, do not just learn about grammar.

6.  Find friends to study and speak with

Having learning partner can keep you motivated. Learning English together can be very encouraging as you can share ideas and problems of your learning.

7.  Choose learning materials that relate to your interest

By choosing materials that is on your interest, your learning will be much enjoyable and fun. In turn, it will make you learning effective.

8.  Learn grammar Integrated

It is much more effective to learn grammar through practical usage. If you just learn grammar separately, you will just easily forget it because grammar by itself does not help you use the language. The most effective way of learning grammar is by employing it.

9.  Don’t hesitate to practice your speaking – communicate and use the language

You will memorize something easier as you also activate your muscle while you absorb it in your mind. Your movement helps you to memorize the concept you learn. Thus, move your mouth! Don’t think that as you understand something means the muscles of your mouth can produce the sounds. Before practicing it, it won’t be effective.

10.  Be patient with yourself

Don’t easily be frustrated. Keep in your mind that learning is a process; it takes time. It is not a computer that is either on or off and can be programmed!

  2. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
