Get Your EFL Students Motivated
Learning will be very effective as your students are motivated. However, motivating your students, especially your EFL learners somehow is a big challenge to face. Your EFL class may consist of a great amount of students with different learning styles, interests, and life experiences. In order to get your students’ motivated and interested in your learning, you have to be able to tap into your students’ individual learning styles and interests.
Below are some tips to motivate your students:
1. Put high expectation.
Before your EFL class is started, set reasonable objectives for your students’ progress. Put your expectations based on your students’ objectives and they really will. Never underestimate your students because this will influence your way of teaching and also your communication with your students. It in turn will make your students discouraged and de-motivated. Additionally, many studies prove that students achieve at higher rates when their teachers have high expectations for them.
2. Keep your teaching atmosphere positive and inspiring.
Learning English itself is already something hard for your students or it is even viewed as a burden so that it is really important for you to create a positive an uplifting atmosphere in your EFL classroom. A fun, cheerful, and motivating environment can stimulate your EFL students’ intrinsic need to succeed in their learning.
3. Don’t forget to praise
Praise is really important in your teaching. Your positive reinforcement can encourage your EFL students to make a better and harder effort. Besides praising, you can also give rewards stickers, or stars for the highest test score or for those who are able to answer the questions correctly. Rewards and privileges are great motivational tools for your students’ hard work.
4. Vary your teaching
Incorporate different learning styles. In order to fulfill all your EFL students’ needs you have to be able to vary your teaching strategies, techniques, methods, and media. Additionally, because your students learn differently, you also have to be able to vary your scoring aids or means by which your students earn rewards.
5. Connect your teaching with your EFL students’ context
Your students’ learning will be much easier if you can make them be able to draw the new materials on their own experiences to enrich and comprehend them.
6. Encourage your students to ask
Always ensure that your students are not hesitated to ask questions when they are unclear on the new materials given and that you are always willing to help them with those problems.
